Cool Climate Coastal

Wines from the Pacific

The mythical SeaGoat,

emerged from the

depths of the Ocean -

Lost its tail on the shores and climbed through the valleys into the hills. So too, frigid waters from Alaska, travel South with a deep current that wells up to the surface on the coast and turns into Fog that pours through valley into the Sta. Rita Hills.

These “SeaGoat Fogs” cool the vineyards and bring moisture to create perfect cool-climate grape growing environment.

About Us & Our Process

We almost gave up California Chards until we tasted wines from the Santa Rita Hills….

Our growing obsession to make wines in the this region soon became a reality when a good friend, who owns a winery in the Santa Rita Valley offered us a few barrels of Chardonnay, sourced from different vineyards, to make our own blend - and Sea Goat Wines was born.

This is the first bottling of our cool climate Pacific Coast wine selection.

Our background is in importing wines - over more than two decades we have honed our skills in tasting wines and selecting the best lots from wineries and often helping in the blending process.

We understand the relationship between terroir and wines - and we always look for honest wines, with a sense of place. So naturally, we avoid wineries and winemakers that mask wines with too much oak or process.

As this project evolves we will work with existing wineries and custom blend barrels from their selection to create our own bottling. Most wineries prefer to remain anonymous - and we respect that but we like to give props to winemakers - terroir & label designers.

SeaGoat Chardonnay

Sta. Rita Hills 2016/ 2017

Our first effort included 11 Barrels of Chardonnay sourced from three different vineyards planted in chalky, sea-bed soils, alluvial soils and clay rich parcels.

All wines were fermented in stainless steel and aged 6 months in 2 year and neutral french oak barrels - imparting balance but little oak flavor.

TASTE: It begins with tangerine, Raw Honey, white Flower, Beeswax nose – Mid palate is Saline warm, round with baked Sourdough, ripe Apple and great mineral acidity that persists into the finish - It ends with more Beeswax, ripe Apple, toasted Lemon notes and a long mineral zippy finish that leaves you wondering … are you in Chablis, Meursault or Coastal California.

OTHER WINE FACTS - Cases Made: 300 - Age potential: 8-10 years - Alcohol 13%

Mythology & Symbolism

capricorn zodiac.jpg

Astrologically, the constellation of Capricorn is associated with a powerful, mythological archetype called the Sea Goat.

The depths of the Ocean represents the subconscious realm of intuition, insight, inner knowing and all that is mysterious.

Mountain peaks are the highest points in the physical realm. Symbolic of higher consciousness the domain of logic, reason and …all that is rational. In mythology, mountain peaks are the domains of gods, sages and mystics.

The Sea Goat, therefore, symbolizes the evolved individual who has mastered both reason and intuition; consciousness and subconsciousness; the rational and the mysterious.

SEA GOAT MYTHOLOGY

The story behind the Capricorn zodiac sign begins with the Sea-Goat Pricus.  He is the father of the race of sea-goats, who are known to be intelligent and honorable creatures that live in the deep sea near the coast.  They can speak and think and are favored by the gods.

However sea-goats seem to be naturally drawn to the shore.  And use their front goat legs to pull themselves onto the beach and lay in the sun.  But the longer they stay on shore, the more they "evolve" from sea-goats into regular goats.  Their fish tails become hind legs and they lose their ability to think and speak, essentially becoming the goats that we know today.

This upsets Pricus a great deal.  As the father of the sea-goat race, he is determined to make sure that his children never get to the shore.  In time, he realizes he can not control their destiny and resigns himself to his loneliness.

Seeing his anguish, Chronos the father of time, turns him into the constellation Capricorn. So he can live out his immortality in the sky, forever watching over his offspring on earth from the stars.
